Welcome Back to the Blog for Megan Haskell, Author of The Sanyare Chronicles!

I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago in my weekly Facebook Live broadcast (Wednesdays, 9:30 am Pacific time), but I’ve decided to reopen the blog as another place you can find information about what’s going on with me and my books.

I don’t plan to post everyday, probably not even every week, but whenever I feel like I have news to share I’ll be sure to add it here.

So where am I at right now?

Well, physically, I’m in my home office, but metaphorically…

I’m currently working on The War of the Nine Faerie Realms Trilogy. This is the story of the Great War between the realms, and features Curuthannor, Lhéwen, Aradae, and Rothruinil as they struggle to honor their oaths and their hearts in the face of war.

The first book in the series, Crossroads, is nearly complete. It’s currently sitting with the first group of beta readers for review (more on that in my next post.) However, I don’t plan to release anything until the entire trilogy is at least drafted. I’m doing this for a few reasons:

  1. Completion: So many readers now want a complete series, they won’t read the first book until the last comes out anyway. Even if they do pick up the first one early, they want the instant gratification of being able to buy—or at least preorder—the next one. Because this series is so long and complicated, and given my writing speed (not super fast) I want to make sure I can provide that quick turnaround, and the only way for me to do that is to hold back on the first two releases.

  2. Continuity: One of the benefits of writing the entire trilogy up front is that I can always go back and edit the first book when I think of awesome ideas in the second or third that need to be foreshadowed or carried through the entire series.

  3. Marketing: From a reader’s perspective, marketing doesn’t seem all that important, but from the author/publisher’s perspective, it’s pretty critical, and it’s a lot easier to market when there’s more than one book out. The online store algorithms are more likely to “see” your series and push you higher in the rankings, and increased visibility means more readers see your series, which means they do better overall.

So while Crossroads is being test read by the betas, I’m already working on Book 2 (title TBD). My goal is to have the series drafted by January next year.

Oh, and the girls go back to school next week, so that’s good for productivity!
